Visit by ACT TNB COE-Section Head

On Tuesday the 11th of June LTCOL DEU A Lenhart the new Section Head COE Section at ACT TNB visited COE CSW during his circular journey through different COEs.
The aim of his visit was to introduce himself on his new post and to get in contact maintaining the connection between ACT TNB and the international network of COEs.
After welcoming by the ExecDir, LTCOL Lenhart got an impression of COE CSW’s Program of Work and other issues of concern.
Celebration of Dutch Queensday & Kingsday at COE CSW

In an orange decorated COE CSW’s briefing room at May 8th, CDR NLD N Peet Rood Subject Matter Expert Surface Warfare, gave a half hour presentation on the last Queensday celebration at April 30th in Holland after Queen Beatrix’s abdication.
Among an historical oversight he presented the four successive queens in a row with their German spouses’ involvement in the Dutch Royal family. Elaborated with pictures and films the presentation was also about the new King Willem-Alexander’s inauguration and his charming queen Màxima. The difference between a constitutional monarchy and democracy was handled with the most important aspects.
The celebration was completed after a question and answer session with a traditional “Orange Bitter” toast in the hall to the new King and his Queen accompanied with delicious orange cakes & pies.

Captain DEU Navy Jean Martens (RA sel.) is the new Director COE CSW.The Change of Command Ceremony took place at the Naval Base in Kiel on 17th April 2013.Rear Admiral Mollenhauer, Department Head Operations of the German Naval Command led the ceremony witnessed by about 200 guests from politics, military and industry. After three very successful, but challenging years Rear Admiral (lh) DEU Navy Thomas E.P. JUGEL handed over the responsibility of the COE CSW and the German Flotilla 1 to his successor. Under his leadership the International team of COE CSW succeeded in achieving its full working capacity and became accepted as an adequate member within the COE Community. His speech highlighted the importance of both Maritime Security Conferences in 2011 and 2012, COE CSW organized together with CJOS COE, as memorable milestones with personal, unforgettable impressions.
Promotion of Captain (Res) Peter Kuhn

CDR (Res) Peter Kuhn is one of the reserve officers who conducted several voluntary tours of duty at the COE CSW in Kiel. The latest was a 4 week employment as Branch Head AI (Analysis and Implementation). Today Vice Admiral Lange, Deputy CNO German Navy came alongside to promote CDR (Res) Peter Kuhn to the rank of a Navy Captain (Res). In NATO terms he is now an OF-5. The ceremony took place in Officers’ Mess at the Naval Base Kiel.

Celebration of Greek National Day

On 21st of March COE CSW celebrated the Greek National Day. Commander GRC N Stavros Karlatiras, Staff Officer Future Requirements at COE CSW summarized the key points and background information of the Greek National Day. The international community of COE CSW honoured wholeheartedly the Greek Nation and the Greek Navy.
The event was respectfully attended by the COECSW Executive Director, Branch Heads, Staff Officers, Petty Officers and Civilian Employees.
The Greek National Day occurs on Monday 25th of March 2013 and reminds on the beginning of the War of Greek independence in 1821.

Rear Admiral (lh) DEU Navy Jürgen MANNHARDT, Chairman of COE CSW’s Steering Committee, visited our center 04 March 2013. He was welcomed by the Director COE CSW Rear Admiral (lh) DEU Navy Thomas JUGEL. The purpose of the visit was to inform him on COE CSW’s Program of Work status and upcoming major events. The next two events of high importance are the ‘Conference on Countering IEDs in the Maritime Environment’ in March 2013 and the so called ‘Maritime Information Exchange Meeting 2013’ in April this year. Rear Admiral MANNHARDT was very content with the results achieved by the COE CSW. Captain DEU Navy Heinz-Georg BUSS, Branch Head SME led this visit as acting Executive Director.

18th April 2012

On April 18th 2012 a delegation representing ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems AG (TKMS) visited COE CSW. The delegation of TKMS headed by the Vice Presidents of Sales/Naval Sales, Dipl.-Kfm. Thomas Ruckert and Dipl.-Ing. Univ. Bernd Kulmus was welcomed by the Executive Director, Captain Panknier. During the meeting the respective Programs of Work were discussed and ideas for an enhancement of the cooperation examined. All participants underlined the good potential for a future working-relationship between TKMSand COE CSW and agreed to enforce it by enhancement of their collaboration in selected projects.

Colonel DEU Air Force Storm and Mr. Wedge, Allied Command Transformation, Transformation Network Branch
17th and 18th January 2012

On 17th and 18th January 2012 Colonel Storm, Branch Head Transformation Network Branch, and Mr. Wedge visited COE CSW. They discussed and validated the periodic re-assessment of COE CSW to ensure it still meets the accreditation criteria. The periodic re-assessment is a requirement of the Military Committee Concept for Centres of Excellence. The results will be forwarded by the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation to the Military Committee for notification.

On 7 Dec 2011 a delegation of the German Federal Armed Forces Technical Centre for Ship and Naval Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research (WTD 71) visited COE CSW. The acting Head of Research Division Dr. Kretschmer and the R&T Coordinator, Mr. Norrmann, were welcomed by the Executive Director, Captain Panknier. During the meeting the respective Programs of Work have been discussed and ideas for an enhancement of the cooperation have been examined. All participants were underlining the good relationship between the WTD 71 and COE CSW and agreed to enforce it by enhancement of their collaboration in selected projects.

On 28th of June 2011 Rear Admiral Joachim Rühle, Knowledge Management Director Joint Force Command Naples, visited COE CSW. He received an information brief about the COE CSW and the current projects. In the subsequent dialogue possible suppport from COE CSW to JFC Naples and recent experiences concerning operations in confined and shallow waters at the North-African coast have been discussed.

On 24th of February 2011 Vice Admiral Xavier Magne, Deputy Chief of Naval Avaiation, visited Kiel to participate in the German – French staff talks. He used the opportunity to call on COE CSW to receive first hand information about transformation efforts in the area of confined and shallow waters. Vice Admiral Xavier Magne was accompanied by Rear Admiral Luther from the German Naval Staff. In subsequent discussions the possibilities for the French Navy to cooperate with COE CSW have been addressed.

On 15th of February 2011 Dr. Bartels, member of German Bundestag, visited COE CSW. Dr. Bartels is a member of the defence committee and received information about the COE CSW as an international military organisation and COE CSW’s current projects to support NATO transformation. Dr. Bartels showed also special interest about the living conditions of the international staff officers and their families in Kiel.
