Another day, another Legal Workshop!

Congratulations to the COE CSW Legal Team and organizers and supporters; Mr. Brian Wilson, CDR USCG Cassie Kitchen, Professor Dr. Efthymios Papastavridis, and Mr. Wayne Raabe, on another successful COE CSW hosted Legal Workshop!
The Intersection of Naval Operations, Maritime Law Enforcement, and Human Rights Legal Workshop was hosted in San Francisco, California, USA, 01-03 March 2016. With 25 participants from 9 nations, high level discussions and presentations paved the way for insightful and worthwhile exchanges. Key topics included; Operational Considerations for Navies and Coast Guards in Maritime Law Enforcement and Other Operations; Human Rights Instruments & Key Human Rights Terms and Concepts; U.S. Practice Regarding Human Rights in the Context of Maritime Law Enforcement; Judicial Rulings, Authorities, and Considerations in Counter Piracy and Drug Trafficking in the Context of Human Rights; Human Rights Law and its Effect on Operations and Anticipating Human Rights Law Development; and Maritime Migration and Human Rights.
Two long days of discussions was just enough to scratch the surface and get all interested, motivated, and newly informed on the quagmire of issues that surrounds this complicated topic. While not every problem could be solved or even addressed, participants can take home the thoughts, concerns, and lessons learned from their colleagues and better prepare for future challenges facing our navies and maritime law enforcement entities. This coordinated effort will also aid us in maintaining our productive and effective partnerships at sea.
Aside from avid discussions on the future of Human Rights in the Maritime Domain, the participants had the rare opportunity to visit the busiest U.S. Coast Guard Station (Station Golden Gate) and received a private introduction to the efforts, facilities, and assets of the team stationed there. Also visited, where the participants were again treated to a privet tour, was the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model. The Model is a working hydraulic scale model of the San Francisco Bay Watershed and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta System.
The COE CSW would like to thank all of our participants for their efforts and time. A special thanks to our partners for all their hard work and dedication, without which this workshop would not have been nearly as successful.
