Conference on Operational Maritime Law 2014

2nd Conference on Operational Maritime Law, Rome, Italy, 19 - 23 May 2014

Successfully COE CSW conducted the 2nd Conference on Operational Maritime Law in Rome, Italy, from 19 to 23 May 2014.

The conference was built upon the findings of the previous event conducted in May last year in Northwood/ UK, which emphasized on legal challenges in Maritime Security, as well as the legal syndicate of the MSA Review Workshop that was conducted in Istanbul last October.

More than 70 attendees from 23 countries ranging from Australia, Asia over the Middle East and Europe to North America took part in the conference; amongst them a large number of high ranks up to Flag level. The speakers and attendees came from the Military and Ministries of Defense as well as academia, international organizations and NGOs.

The overall aim of the conference was to study relevant legal matters and discuss respective challenges among experts more in depth in order to develop mutually agreeable solutions which may support current operations and contribute to the planning and executing of current and prospective operations.

Additionally the conference plenum did serve to prepare legal advisors and operators for deployment to Maritime Security Operations. Furthermore the network building aspect of the conference cannot be underestimated. Opportunities to establish close personal relations amongst the attendees have been provided also by social events like the icebreaker buffet on Monday, a visit to the impressive Galleria Colonna on Thursday followed by an outstanding banquet.

As a whole, the participating experts did establish a sound basis for closer cooperation in future and laid the foundation for the establishment of a close fellowship in the field of Operational Maritime Law.

This conference received outstanding support and hospitality from the Italian Armed Forces in providing a wonderful venue and generously hosting the banquet, in particular from the Commando Operativo di Vertice Interforze and the Modeling & Simulation COE, which contributed to the overall organization in an extraordinary way.

As there is obviously a broad interest in continuing the series of this Conference on Operational Maritime Law, COE CSW is already looking for a suitable location for the 3rd execution.
