Integration of UAS into Maritime Operations

Game Changer or just a supportive tool?

Triggered by the boosting variety and numbers of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Vehicles (UAV) within the inventory of NATO Navies, Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM) MARAIR requested the COE CSW to provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) on the increasing challenge to adequately integrate of UAS into maritime Operations. In this context focus areas are Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (JISR), asset de-confliction, battle space management and finally Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA).

Besides the COE CSW also the Combined Joint Operations from the Sea COE (CJOS)  and the Joint Air Power Competence Center (JAPCC) have been requested to participate on this project that initially investigates how far the integration of UAS into Maritime Operations is achieved already, that includes related problems but also successful areas of integration, in order to develop additional options and derive future recommendations for the use of UAS / UAV in the maritime environment.
