A great Show and no Snow!

3-6 October 2016

Turku, Finland

The Center of Excellence’s 4th Operational Maritime Law Conference was held in Turku, Finland from 3-6 October 2016. Almost 90 attendees from 26 countries ranging from Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America participated in this conference, retaining its status as the largest annual legal convention within the NATO framework.

The conference provided  an excellent venue for Legal Advisors, Operators, and Academics, serving as a forum for gainful discussion and helping to shape legal positions among experts supporting current operations or the planning of prospective operations.  The scope ranged from Search and Rescue in the Artic, Human Rights as Sea, to developing Operational Maritime Law challenges in the High North and South China Sea.

This conference received outstanding support and hospitality from the Finnish Navy and the Finnish Ministry of Defense.  Professional relationships were developed and deepened by an accompanying social programm such as an Ice Breaker hosted by the Mayor of Turku, a festive dinner at the pittoresque Officer’s Club of Turku, as well as a guided visit to the impressive Maritime Museum of Finland.

The COE is proud to announce a continuing conversation on prominent operational maritime law issues at the 5th Annual Conference which will be held in Vienna, Austria from 25 -  29 September 2017.
