New Maritime Training Requirements identified

Within the framework of NATO’s Global Programming, the fourth Annual Discipline Conference [ADC] for the Maritime Operations Discipline was held from 27 to 28 May 2019 in Kiel, Germany. As the Department Head [DH] for the Maritime Operations [MarOps] Discipline, the NATO Centre of Excellence for Operations in Confined and Shallow Waters [COE CSW] hosted and conducted the ADC under the guidance of Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation / Joint Force Development [HQ SACT JFD]. Representatives from HQ SACT, HQ MARCOM, HQ LANDCOM, HQ AIRCOM, FRMARFOR, UKMARFOR, SPMARFOR, ITMARFOR, NRDC Greece, NMIOTC, JAPCC, C-IED COE, C2 COE and HNTTS attended the conference.

During the ADC the attendees reviewed NATO’s MarOps training landscape and identified new Training Requirements.  The respective work covered different areas like Hybrid Warfare in a maritime environment, MarOps Legal training, and the preparation of NATO’s maritime High Readiness Forces HQs in their role as a NATO Reaction Force Maritime Component Command. Last but not least, the need for further training course options in the area of operational and exercise planning was investigated.  The COE CSW in its role as the DH for MarOps Education and Training will now lead the process to develop training solutions for the identified training needs in coordination with NATO Schools and other Centres of Excellence.
